When your drain clogs, it can really put a damper on your mood (as well as your home). Fortunately, there are ways to prevent clogs in your bathroom.
The best thing you can do is to buy a drain gate or strainer. These relatively inexpensive devices sit over your drain and catch all the large objects that would otherwise go down it. It will prevent hair, large chunks of soap, and your jewelry from heading into your pipes. Just be sure to clean it out and deposit whatever isn’t valuable in the trash can.
The next best way to prevent clogs is, of course, to not put anything down the drain that doesn’t belong there. This may be easier said than done if your child has an action figure that needs to go cave exploring. However, things like sand — which you should remove before you come in the house to take a bath or shower — and grease should never go down your drain.
Once a week pour a handful of baking soda down the drain and follow it with a cup of vinegar. If you do this at night you can flush the drain with extra hot water in the morning. It will help dissolve makeup oils and soap scum that may otherwise lead to a clogged drain.
