A leaking air conditioner is a common problem. Here are the most common reasons behind this problem and what can be done to address it.
Improper Installation
Your air conditioning unit cools a room by removing moisture from the inside air. This moisture is routed to the back of the unit in order for it to drain properly outside. Therefore, it's crucial that your AC unit is installed with the rear slightly lower than the front end. If not, the water will not drain properly and will leak into the room.
If this is the problem, simply adjust the level of the AC unit so that it is slightly lower at the rear than at the front. Once adjusted correctly, the water will drain properly.
Air Leaks Around the AC Unit
When the perimeter of your AC is not fully sealed, warm outside air seeps into your house. It encounters the cool, dry inside air and results in condensation. If you see water droplets forming under the front edge of the base after running your AC for about 30 minutes, it means there is air leakage around the unit.
The easiest way to solve this problem is to add foam insulation in the gap around the air conditioner. This will stop warm outside air from entering the room and prevent any condensation from occurring.
Blocked Drain Hole
Leaks from your AC can sometimes be caused by a clogged drain hole. This prevents moisture from draining outside; instead it builds up inside the drain hole and ends up leaking inside.
Check the drain hole at the rear of the metal base of your air conditioner. Remove any items or debris that you find. If this is the reason behind your leakage problem, you will have solved it simply by keeping the drain holes clear.
